PADD II OIL: Unplanned Outage at Garyville Refinery: Platts

PADD II OIL

There is an unplanned outage at Marathon’s 597k b/d Garyville refinery, Louisiana after the plant lost power, Platts said.

  • The outage is likely to be bullish for US diesel and gasoline and could impact around 200k b/d of output respectively for the duration, Platts added.
  • Conversely, the outage is bearish for crude and will also cut medium crude runs by around 250k b/d, light crude runs by 165k b/d, and heavy crude runs by 80k b/d.
  • The fall in medium crudes is likely to hit Mars differentials and similar imported grades.
  • No ther outages are reported at this time, but it is possible other refineries could encounter issues due to current cold weather conditions.
  • Freezing temperatures below 20F correlate with increased refinery outages, Platts said, adding that outages reached 1.7m b/d in Feb. 2021.
  • Reports that Houston port is closed, likely to both inbound and outbound traffic, could hit crude imports and product exports.
