US LNG Exports Fell 5% in Jan Amid Cold Weather and Freeport Outage

LNG

US LNG exports fell nearly 5% from 8.7 m metric tons in December to 8.3m metric tons in January according to LSEG data with weaker export set to continue into February.

  • Exports were limited by cold weather and Freeport LNG outages during the month. One of three Freeport liquefaction units is expected to be out of service for about a month amid an electric motor issue following the mid-January cold weather.
  • Europe received 67% of the total exports at 5.54m tons in January up from 61% in December amid Red Sea and Panama Canal shipping issues. Exports to Asia accounted for 17% or 1.42m tons compared to 26.6% the prior month.
  • The Latin America share increased from 6% to 8.1% on the month with cargoes to Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Columbia and Jamaica.
