US Mediator Set for Lebanon/Israel Maritime Border Dispute

A US mediator will head to Beirut next week to try and settle the maritime border dispute between Israel and Lebanon.

  • US envoy Amos Hochstein will visit this coming Sunday or Monday. Lebanese officials said yesterday they had invited a US official to come to Beirut to calm tensions after a drillship hired by Israel entered contested waters this week.
  • The US has been mediating talks on the dispute since 2020.
  • The value of the gas assets has increased as EU nations in particular are aiming to setup supply deals to bring Israeli gas to the region via Egypt’s LNG gasification infrastructure as they aim to move away from Russian volumes.
