US Refinery Runs Keep Rising

US refinery utilisation rose to 94.2% last week, up from 92.6% the week prior and the highest rate since December 2019. The East Coast saw refinery utilization rise to 99.2%, its highest since November 2017, but refinery capacity is much lower than then given refinery shutdowns in recent years.

  • Refinery crude runs rose by 354,000 barrels per day to 16.4 million bpd, their highest since January 2020.
  • US refiners have been pushing runs due to strong margins for middle distillates which are expected to remain strong this summer as road and air demand increases. Refiners are also being prompted to run harder as European middle distillate tightness gives less import options.
