VdL: EU To Consider Emergency Authorisation Of COVID-19 Vaccines

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivers a statement on COVID-19.

  • Says that the EU is considering issuing emergency authorisation of COVID-19 vaccines in order to speed up rollout, and that from now on contracts with vaccine producers will need to contain details on plans for production of vaccines in the EU [an omission that caused the upheaval in late-Jan with AstraZeneca].
  • Says the EU is willing to consider using production centres outside the EU for its supply to ensure speedy rollout.
  • VdL: "We must stay ahead of the threat of new coronavirus variants. With the new HERA Incubator, our goal is clear: be prepared to rapidly produce on a large scale vaccines effective against those variants."
  • VdL: "HERA incubator has 5 priorities: 1. Identify & analyse variants quicker, 2. Support adaptation of current vaccines if needed & development of new ones, 3. Launch EU network of clinical trials, 4. Fast-track approval of updated vaccines, 5. Scale up mass production of vaccines"
