Venezuela and Guyana Presidents Set to Meet Thursday Over Border Dispute

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is set to meet Guyana President Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Thursday over the recently escalating border dispute between the two nations based on a letter from the prime minister of Saint Vincet and the Grenadines.

  • Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, spoke with Maduro on Saturday. Gonsalves also serves as president pro tempore of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
  • Guyana officials have confirmed the meeting but said "Guyana's land boundary is not up for discussion."
  • Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been invited to the meeting as an observer having recently called for discussions.
  • The US has announced its “unwavering support for Guyana's sovereignty," in a move that puts further pressure on the US to implement oil and gas sanctions on Venezuela again
