Orban Could Extend Price Cap Measures

HUNGARY
  • PM Orban this morning stated he wants to extend price caps in Hungary (currently scheduled to roll-off on July 1st), but added that the government will proceed with caution on such measures. As such, if the price caps are phased out, they will be phased out “very slowly”.
  • Orban also told state radio that he has requested that the Hungary’s fuel price caps be exempted from EU regulation. The proposals would see cars with Hungarian licence plates charged less for petrol, while foreign licence plates are charged more – in contravention of current EU law.
  • Elsewhere, the opposition parties in Hungary are also aware of the cost of living crisis, and have submitted to parliament a series of bills proposing food subsidies for the poorest members of society.
