12,000 Troops To Be Pulled Out of Germany

US

The US gov't is set to announce plans today for 12,000 troops stationed in
Germany to be moved out of the country. Of these, 5,400 will be moved to
other US bases in Europe, while 6,600 will be moved back to the US.

  • President Trump has spoken for a number of years about removing US
troops from Germany in response to what he calls the country's
"delinquency" with regards to NATO payments. At present Germany pays
below 2.0% of GDP on its defence as is targeted by all NATO members.
  • Many of the 5,400 troops remaining in Europe are likely to shift to
Poland, whose government and president have forged strong relations with
    the Trump administration.
  • The move is reported to cost 'billions' of dollars and will take several
    years to complete.
  • There is not full support for the shift even within Trump's own Republican
Part, with 22 members of the House Armed Services Committee saying the
withdrawal of US troops from Europe risked Russian aggression.
