6th EU Sanctions Package Stalled Due To New Hungary Demands

The sixth package of EU sanctions against Russia has stalled again due to fresh demands from Hungary to remove Russian orthodox church Patriarch Kirill from the list of sanctioned individuals.

  • Yesterday, it had appeared Budapest had greenlit the sanctions package after the EU Council agreed to a carveout on Russia pipeline oil.
  • Hungarian MEPKatalin Cseh: 'The whole EU sanctions machine stalled because Orban wants Patriarch Kirill off the sanctions list. This is the main problem with unanimity— it makes the EU look like a joke.'
  • Alberto Nardelli of Bloomberg: 'EU ambassadors still haggling over the sanctions package as Hungary wants Patriarch Kirill removed from the proposed sanctions list.'
