A$ Gains Against USD But Not Other Major Currencies

Aussie is 0.2% higher against the US dollar as the latter has weakened, but has lost against other currencies on the pullback in risk. AUDUSD is currently trading around 0.6750 close to its intraday high of 0.6755.

  • Aussie is down 0.5% against the yen and is around 90.22. It is also 0.2% weaker against kiwi at about 1.066. It is down 0.1% against both the euro and the pound.
  • Equity markets across the region have followed the northern hemisphere lower with the ASX down 1.2% and the Hang Seng -1.3%. S&P e-minis have stabilised during today’s APAC session. Oil prices continued their move down and WTI is another 0.5% lower to about $78.60/bbl. Iron ore has shifted higher to around $114/tonne on news that Australian trade tensions may be easing with China.
  • Another quiet day with only US jobless claims scheduled later. The next major Australian data, November CPI and retail sales, print on January 11.
