AB InBev Underperforms As US Union Ramps Up Strike Rhetoric

  • Noting an escalation last week in the strike rhetoric at Anheuser-Busch InBev’s US plants.
  • “The halting of beer production at Anheuser-Busch’s U.S. breweries appears imminent and unavoidable” - Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien (01 Feb)
  • The union is demanding job security commitments, with a strike authorized by 99% of Teamsters at 12 breweries if a satisfactory five-year deal is not reached by 29 Feb.
  • This comes after AB InBev reduced their US Sales team headcount in January (numbers not disclosed) and after the company last year announced plans to cut it’s US workforce by 2% (~350 jobs).
  • Certain AB InBev EUR lines have underperformed peers since end-Jan with the ABIBB EUR 26s widening close to 20bps vs. Diageo 26s as per the below chart.
