Absa Manufacturing PMI Sees August Improvement

SOUTH AFRICA
MNI (London)

SOUTH AFRICA AUG ABSA MFG PMI 52.1 (FCST 48.2); JUL 47.6

  • Following a brief dip into contractionary territory in July, the South African manufacturing PMI rebounded to 52.1 in August, exceeding market expectations.
  • Easing load-shedding saw business activity break the 50-breakeven point for the first time since March and since the April flooding which greatly hampered production capacities.
  • The decline in new orders slowed, implying a small recovery in demand. Price growth also slowed, largely due to fuel costs alleviating and optimism bounced back.
  • With the SARB set to meet on Sept 22, this data will be seen as cautiously positive. As such, the data underpins confidence in the hiking cycle following the surprise 75bp July hike as the SARB tackles inflation soaring at 7.8% y/y.
