Aggressive Shift Higher In Local Swap Curve In February

BRAZIL
  • The shift higher in Brazil's local swap rates curve has been aggressive in 2021 and picked up pace in February with parts of the belly rising by 125 basis points.
  • Continued political noise surrounding the emergency bill has raised concerns over the fiscal trajectory as well as cementing the need for the BCB to raise interest rates at their upcoming meeting on March 17th. Additionally, a recent worsening of the Covid situation has led to tighter restrictions being imposed in multiple regions.
  • FX interventions appear to be having more of a limited impact for the currency as USDBRL continues to make new highs above 5.68 despite $1 billion being sold.
