Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio confirms that the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo Luca Attanasio has been killed in an ambush on his UN convoy in the unstable North Kivu region in the east of the county.
- The regions of North and South Kivu have been under the effective control of anti-gov't rebel groups for a number of years, with gov't forces unable to gain control of the heavily-forested areas. The ability of rebel groups to slip across borders into neighbouring Uganda, Rwanda, and Burindi also makes eliminating them as a fighting force almost impossible.
- Two others, including an Italian security officer, were killed in what is believed to have been a kidnap attempt.
