ANC, DA Reach Deal On Allocation Of Key Posts

Bloomberg reports that the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA) and other parties have reached a deal on key posts, which will allow President Cyril Ramaphosa to stay on for another term. This comes as the first parliament sitting got underway.

  • The piece notes that "the position of speaker will be taken by an ANC candidate, while the deputy position will go to the Democratic Alliance." Lawmakers will vote on the matter once the swearing-in ceremony is completed.
  • TimesLIVE now reports that Agriculture Minister Thoko Didiza will become speaker. The DA are reportedly yet to nominate their candidate for deputy speaker, but Annelie Lotriet (current deputy chief whip) seems to be the front-runner.
