ANC Elective Conference Begins, Eskom Ramps Up Load-Shedding

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The ANC's national elective conference kicks off today, with the races for the top six positions set to begin tonight. President Ramaphosa is running for re-election as party leader and is widely expected to defeat his rival Zweli Mkhize, having secured a considerably larger number of branch nominations and survived a parliamentary vote on the Phala Phala report.
  • Eskom has escalated load-shedding to Stage 6 due to excessive use of diesel and the loss of eight generating units overnight. Power outages were at Stage 4 yesterday and were supposed to stay that way until Sunday, before easing to Stage 3. The update came after the resignation of Eskom CEO Andre De Ruyter, who remains at the helm in caretaker capacity.
  • As a reminder, South Africa observes a public holiday today.
