ANC Executive Bodies Hold Meetings To Discuss Ramaphosa Situation

News24 reports that the meeting of the ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) ended abruptly with a decision that the Phala Phala report should be discussed by the top four officials and the National Working Committee (NWC). A reporter clarified that the NEC meeting did not collapse but was adjourned to allow for NWC discussions before the NEC sits on Sunday.

  • The portal notes that ANC top four officials (President Ramaphosa, Deputy President Mabuza, ANC Chair Mantashe and Secretary General Mashatile) are holding virtual talks in the interim between NEC and NWC meetings.
  • For clarity, the 86-member NEC is the party's chief executive organ elected at a national conference every five years. The NWC is a subcommittee elected by NEC members, which is responsible for running day-to-day business of the party.
  • It had earlier emerged that President Ramaphosa's allies were advising him not to resign as they see a chance to defeat accusations against him at the political level. A News24 reporter noted that the advice given to the leader was "based on survivalist instincts," as Ramaphosa's resignation could trigger a domino effect.
