ANC Prepares For BRICS Parties Meeting, Ramaphosa Denies Talk Of Plot To Oust Mashatile

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The ruling African National Congress will brief the media at 10:00BST/11:00SAST about preparations for the upcoming "BRICS Political Parties Plus Dialogue." The three-day event will take place in Boksburg, Gauteng between 18 and 20 July. Speaking on Friday, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula confirmed that the radical left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters have not been invited to the conference and said that the ANC had no fresh information on whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would attend the BRICS summit in August.
  • Reports coming out of the ANC's National Working Committee (NWC) meeting over the weekend highlighted tensions between key officials. President Cyril Ramaphosa denied allegations that some within the ANC have been plotting to remove Deputy President Paul Mashatile, after South Africa's second-in-command told City Press on Sunday that people conspiring against him set a deadline to unseat him for next month. Elsewhere, the Sunday Times reported that Ramaphosa and Mbalula clashed with Energy Minister Gwede Mantashes over his failure to attend a top-level meeting to launch a European-funded green-energy initiative.
  • Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa told the NWC that the recovery in Eskom's energy availability factor to the current 60% and the corresponding reduction in load-shedding are sustainable. His comments were in line with optimistic messaging from the government and the ruling party, who are trying to make progress on addressing the energy crisis ahead of the 2024 elections. In its latest update, Eskom announced that the pattern of moving between no load-shedding (00:00-16:00) and Stage 3 outages (16:00-24:00) will be repeated daily until further notice.
