ANC Serves Court Papers On Eskom & Its Former CEO For Making Corruption Allegations

SOUTH AFRICA

The African National Congress' Secretary General Fikle Mbalula said that the ruling party has served court papers on Eskom and its former CEO Andre de Ruyter, who has recently accused high-profile members of the ANC of corruption at the electricity utility.

  • De Ruyter's interview last week led to his immediate ouster and put ANC officials in the spotlight, as they were forced to address wide-ranging accusations of graft and theft, which the former Eskom chief said cost the utility ZAR1bn per day.
  • "We did follow up on de Ruyter and served court papers on Eskom and the former CEO this week," Mbalula told the media today. "We think that there is something illegal committed by de Ruyter."
  • Corruption allegations create a fresh headwind for the ANC as it is going through a politically busy period and prepares for the 2024 general election.
  • Mbalula said that the party gives de Ruyter seven days to respond to court papers and will take further steps if the ousted Eskom chief fails to comply.
