ANC To Announce Outcomes Of Elections For Its Top Seven Positions

  • Supporters of Cyril Ramaphosa and Zweli Mkhize claimed their camps were edging towards victory ahead of the announcement of ANC leadership race today, even as the incumbent secured way more branch nominations ahead of the contest. Vote counting in elections for the ruling party's top seven positions (as opposed to top six as per tradition) continued into Monday night after a turbulent nomination process, with the elective conference set to resume at 9am. During the heated proceedings over the weekend, one of the few rebels in the recent Phala Phala vote Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and current Deputy President David Mabuza both declined nominations from the conference floor, while delegates traded accusations of vote buying.
  • Eskom announced that it would reduce load-shedding to Stage 5 from this morning and then to Stage 4 from Tuesday morning, sticking with this level through the remainder of the week. The government confirmed that the armed forces were deployed to some of the power stations to protect them against vandalism and theft, which have helped derail the electricity utility's efforts to meet demand.
