Another Republican Infra Offer Could Come Friday, But Deal Prospects Waning

US

Politico reporting this morning that Congressional Republicans are considering making another counteroffer on Pres Biden's infrastructure plan, which could come "as soon as Friday, when [Sen] Capito will be talking to Biden again." NYT also reported there would be another meeting between Biden and Capito Friday.

  • No details on any counteroffer though, following a failure to reach a deal Wednesday in a high-profile Oval Office meeting between Biden and Capito.
  • Politico's sources sound skeptical that a deal will be made, and "Republicans in the [negotiating] group are starting to feel discouraged." Sticking points for the Republicans including $1trn in new infra spending and the inclusion of corporate tax hikes, per the report.
  • Punchbowl corroborates these details, and opine that the negotiations seem "to be going backward", with Republicans still looking for ~$250B in new infra spending, and using repurposed COVID relief money at that.
  • We're getting into crunch time for the negotiations, with July seen as a key month in the infra timeline for many Democrats - without sufficient bipartisan support, passage of a large infra deal will become more challenging.
