Another Softer Consumer Confidence Measure

CANADA
  • The Nanos weekly consumer confidence poll doesn’t usually get much attention but it’s worth noting its further decline earlier today, falling to 53.2 for May 20.
  • It’s yet to see the same magnitude of declines as U.Mich sentiment in the US, but prior to the pandemic it would be the lowest Canadian consumer confidence since Feb'16 and Jul’15 and is close to 2013 lows.
  • Of note within the survey, the share of those seeing finances worse today than year ago hit 41%, the second highest reading for the survey which began in 2008, whilst perceptions of job security have started to fade from high levels.
  • This adds to last week’s separate survey by the Conference Board of Canada showing the largest decline in consumer confidence since the pandemic.
