COAL

ARA coal inventories declined by 0.22mn tons last week to 5.04mn tons, the lowest level since May 2022, terminal data by Montel showed.

  • Coal inventories at Rotterdam’s EMO terminal declined by 0.2mn tons last week to 2.8mn tons. Stocks at the OBA terminal in Amsterdam fell by 0.01mn tons to 1.6mn tons last week.
  • Inventories at Rotterdam’s smaller EBS terminal were unchanged at 0.53m tons. Stocks at Ovet’s Vlissingen terminal edged down by 0.005mn tons to 0.59mn tons.
  • Coal imports into ARA hubs in May are likely to be around 2.3mn tons, up from 2.1mn in April but down by 1.4mn tons year on year, DBX estimates showed.
  • The decline in imports is likely due to a lack of spot demand for seaborne imports as utilities focus on withdrawing existing port and plant stocks, market participants told Montel.
  • API 2 coal June is currently trading at the lowest since 30 April amid sufficient supply and soft European demand.
    • Rotterdam Coal JUN 24 down 1.3% at 106.25 USD/MT
