Argentina, Chile: Governments Dispute Southern Maritime Borders

  • Argentina has accused Chile of trying to claim its southern territorial waters after the Chilean government published an updated map expanding its continental shelf into a zone near Antarctica claimed by Buenos Aires, El Pais reported Sept 2. (Stratfor by RANE)
  • Territorial disputes are a hot-button topic in both Argentina and Chile, which are also both slated to hold elections later this year. Each government will thus be incentivized to emphasize this maritime dispute in an effort to rally support at home.
  • In doing so, Santiago and Buenos Aires will probably seek international recognition for their respective claims to the southern waters. But they remain highly unlikely to resort to military tactics, leaving the row as a primarily diplomatic and political issue.
