Argentina’s Reform Bill Has Implications for Natgas
NATGAS
The Argentinian Chamber of Deputies is currently voting to approve chapters of President Javier Milei's Omnibus reform bill as the govt seeks to pass what would be the first major legislative package since Milei came to office.
- Earlier in the day the lower house approved the Omnibus or 'Basic Law' reform as a whole by a margin of 142-106, with the chamber now voting on each major chapter separately
- Chapter II covers natural gas and introduces new regulations for LNG. This includes five articles that allow for 30-year contracts for LNG export projects and guarantees that gas supply cannot be interrupted.
- The government’s intention is to speed up monetisation of the Vaca Muerta shale play, which has reserves of around 308 Tcf of natural gas.
- Even if each chapter of the package passes the Chamber it still has to go through the Senate where Milei's LLA, its conservative PRO allies and a number of independent parties backing the govt are even less assured of securing a majority.
