As Expected, Salvini Tells President The Centre-Right Wants Elections

Wires reporting that Matteo Salvini, head of the right-wing populist League, has informed President Sergio Matterella that the centre-right bloc of parties want to see a snap general election.

  • The announcement from the centre-right bloc - comprising Salvini's League, the conservative nationalist Brothers of Italy, and the moderate centre-right Forza Italia of former PM Silvio Berlusconi - comes as no surprise given that opinion polls show the bloc would be on course to win a majority in any upcoming election.
  • PM Giuseppe Conte, having resigned earlier in the week, is still attempting to corral a parliamentary majority that would have to involve minor parties, independents, and defecting Forza Italia lawmakers to avoid snap elections or a technocratic gov't.
