AUSSIE: AUD seeing some strength after a big jump in headline building
approvals. Monthly figure rises to 11.7% in November against -1.3% expected and
a previous of -0.1%. Annual figure up 17.1% from a revised 17.5% previously.
These figures follow 2 months of above expectations data.
- AUD/USD jumps to session high of 0.7853 before dipping back to 0.7852 last.
- The reaction was tempered by weaker ANZ Job Advertisements data, December
monthly print at -2.3% from 1.1% previously, this denotes the biggest monthly
drop since April 2016 signaling the labor market could slow this year after an
unusually strong 2017. However, ANZ's head of Australian Economics David Plank
points out that job ads could be volatile in the December month with 2016 for
example showing a 2% drop in ads in that month. Labour Market data on 18 January
will be closely watched.
