August Advance Goods Trade Deficit -USD82.9B

  • The U.S. advance international trade gap widened in August by 3.5% to -USD82.9 billion, above expectations for an increase to -USD81.8 billion, according to figures released Tuesday by the Census Bureau. July's deficit was revised slightly to -USD80.1 billion (prev -USD79.3 billion).
  • August wholesale inventories rose 0.5% to USD637 billion, far above expectations for a 0.1% m/m decline, though still down 0.5% from a year earlier. July inventories were down a revised 0.1% (prev -0.3%).
  • Advance retail inventories were up 0.8% in August (USD599.7 billion), slightly lower than forecasts for a 1.1% increase. July wholesale inventories grew by an unrevised 1.2%.
