August Housing Starts -5.1%; Permits -0.9%

  • U.S. housing starts fell by 5.1% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.416 million in August, according to figures released Thursday by the Census Bureau, well below expectations for a saar of 1.483 million. August housing starts were up 2.8% from a year ago.
  • July's starts were revised down slightly to 1.492 million (prev 1.496 million).
  • Permits fell 0.9% in August to a saar of 1.470 million after rising to 1.483 million in July. Markets had expected a saar of 1.517 million. From a year earlier, permits were down 0.1%.
  • Completions fell 7.5% to a saar of 1.233 million in August from 1.333 million in July. Completions were down 2.4% from a year ago.
