Austria Moves to Limit Gas Use

Austria is aiming to move power plants and industry away from using gas and towards oil where possible according to its energy minister, Leonore Gewessler this week.

  • "Power plants and industrial companies will be instructed to upgrade their systems for dual operation to the extent that it is technically and economically feasible. That means that plants can run on natural gas as well as on other energy sources - in most cases it will be crude oil," Gewessler said.
  • The measures are aimed at the largest gas consumers in Austria, to help the country build storage ahead of winter and reduce dependence on Russian supplies.
  • Gewessler was speaking after an emergency meeting regarding a slowdown in Austrian gas storage filling last week which has now recovered she said.
