Austrian Chancellor: Putin Said Gas Supplies To Europe Stable

In an interview with APA, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has claimed that during their meeting earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that gas supplies to Europe would remain stable, and that they can continue to be paid for in euros.

  • Nehammer says that Austria, along with Germany and Hungary, opposes an embargo on Russian gas, stating that sanctions "should be painful for Russia, not the European Union".
  • "The gas embargo is about the power of the factual...Self-demanding this gas embargo would mean that both industry and households would suffer severe damage from the non-delivery of the gas."
  • Nehammer remained downbeat on his assessment of the potential for more conflict, stating that "Basically, there is now a threat of brutal confrontation in the Donbass. Both sides are preparing for a very intense and, from a human point of view, devastating battle."
