Axios-US To Sanction Settlers Involved In WB Violence, 1st Time Since 90s

ISRAEL

Axios reporting that for the first time since the Clinton administration, the White House is set to impose sanctions in the form of visa bans on 'several dozen' Israeli settlers in the West Bank involved in violence against Palestinians. The State Dep't has not commented, but Axios reports that "The move shows how concerned the Biden administration is about escalating attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank — and that the Israeli government isn't doing enough to prevent the violence."

  • The US is seen as wanting the Israeli gov't to do more to stop such violence, which the White House views as disruptive to the prospect of a two-state solution.
  • Moreover, the Biden administration is also facing pressure from the left-wing of the Democratic party to limit its support for Israel amid its war against Hamas, with notable grassroot efforts attempting to get the US to push the Netanyahu gov't toward a permanent ceasefire.
