Azerbaijan Eyes New Gas Supply Deals With EU Markets

Azerbaijan is negotiating several long-term natural gas supply contracts for the duration of 5-10 years with new EU markets such as Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Vitaliy Baylarbayov, the deputy vice president of Socar, said.

  • “Some of these long-term contracts can be signed this year or next year,” Baylarbayov said.
  • The country got a boost in April from an agreement with European network operators that will open its gas markets beyond the Balkans and Italy.
  • “Companies from Greece, Slovakia, Czech Republic and many other countries are interested in Azerbaijani gas. There are better interconnections within Europe now for our gas to reach these markets,” Baylarbayov added.
  • Azerbaijan gas been supplying Europe with natural gas via the Southern Gas corridor, running through Georgia and Turkey into Italy.
  • Azerbaijan is also working to boost supplies to its other partners, bringing extra volumes to Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. Italy aims to get as much as 15bcm of natural gas from Azerbaijan, he said.
  • Azerbaijan this year expects to send around half of the 24.5bcm of natural gas exports to Europe, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said earlier this month.
