BOE: Bank of England urged to hold back on quantitative easing (The Times)
- The Bank of England should do the minimum possible this week to prevent
financial markets overheating and to keep its powder dry in case of a possible
second spike in infections, a group of senior economists has said. The Bank is
expected to unveil at least another GBP100 billion of quantitative easing
tomorrow. The Times' shadow monetary policy committee urged policymakers to
tread carefully, however, as markets are already frothy and the state has
injected more than GBP100 billion of stimulus. In a divided shadow MPC, a
majority supported Charles Goodhart, a former ratesetter, who said the Bank
should "do as little as they think that they could get away with.
