ECB: Banque de France's Villeroy appeared to signal in appearances
(webcast/CNBC) this morning that the ECB was likely to boost PEPP perhaps as
soon as its June 4 meeting, calling the programme a "masterpiece".
- "It is in the name of our mandate that we will very probably need to go even
further," he said, while also suggesting that the ECB need not "cling" to
capital keys to determine country-by-country purchases: that "would be an
uncalled-for constraint that would undermine the very effectiveness of our
intervention efforts".
- Villeroy also noted that the ECB is "clearly" willing to overshoot its
close-to-but-just-below 2% inflation target, while the bank will examine whether
that target should be considered the basis of an average over time.
