BELGIUM: Vooruit Now Open To Joining Fed Gov't, Could Pave Way To Majority

BELGIUM

The centre-left Flemish Vooruit (Onward) party has for the first time since the 9 June election raised the prospect of being part of the federal gov't, a development that could pave the way to the formation of a majority coalition. Vooruit leader Melissa Depraetere said on 20 June that her party could be open to joining a federal coalition "provided the content is right". Depraetere said the party “would not budge on our core issues”, but that it was willing to work towards an agreement.

  • The four parties currently looking to reach an agreement are the Dutch-speaking Flemish nationalist New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) and centre-right Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V) parties and the French-speaking liberal conservative Reformist Movement (MR) and centrist Les Engages (LE). Together, these parties hold 69 seats in the 150-member Chamber of Representatives, short of the 76 majority threshold. However, with the additional 13 Vooruit members it would be able to cross this mark.
  • Belgian political parties are well-used to gov't formation processes with erstwhile political adversaries. Even with this, the possible coalition option could prove difficult. Vooruit is the only party of the centre-left that would be included, risking a right-ward shift in policy-making that could result in a backlash from supporters. Vooruit's addition would also see a stronger bent towards Dutch-speaking parties with 48 MPs in gov't compared to 34 for French speakers, a potential sticking point for MR and LE.
