President Biden ends the first week of 2024 with his approval rating stagnant at 38.3% - near lows of his presidency - according to FiveThirtyEight.
- At 15:15 ET 20:15 GMT this evening he will deliver the first speech of his 2024 presidential election campaign, focusing on the threat posed to US democracy by former President Trump and his 'MAGA' movement.
- The speech will likely set the tone of the Democrat campaign leading up to the general election in November. Democrats overperformed expectations at 2022's midterm elections, in part due to a strategy isolating 'extreme' GOP candidates in moderate districts.
- This approach is again likely to dominate Democrat strategy, especially considering the optics of Trump's ongoing criminal cases linked to the events of January 6, 2021.
