Biden Nixes Prospect Of A Ukraine Trip

US

Wires have reported that US President Joe Biden has ruled out a trip to Ukraine as part of his tour of Europe this week - for a G7 summit in Germany, and a NATO summit in Madrid.

  • Reuters: "Biden says he thinks it’s very likely Ukraine will become a member of the European Union."
  • Biden is one of the few remaining NATO leaders yet to visit Ukraine, following a trip by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron over the weekend.
  • Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko: "We definitely, and I, invite President Biden to visit Ukraine because, now, June is a vital month for Ukrainians' future."
  • There had been some suggestion that a Biden visit might help invigorate Western support for Ukraine which has shown some signs of faltering in recent weeks.
  • NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg: "We must not cease to support Ukraine. Even if the costs are high, not only for military support, but also because of rising energy and food prices."
