Biden Says NATO Will Meet "Systemic Challenges" Posed By China

NATO

US President Joe Biden is speaking following the conclusion of the NATO summit in Madrid. Livestream here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/live/

  • Biden says: "The last time NATO drafted a new mission statement was 12 years ago." He says that in that mission statement Russia was classified as a "partner" and "China was not mentioned at all."
  • Biden says: "At this summit we rallied our alliance to meet the direct threat Russia poses to Europe and the systemic challenges that China poses to the rules-based order."
  • Biden says that, for the first time, the majority of NATO members are on track to meet 2% GDP commitments to the alliance.
  • The NATO summit appears to have formalised a more global role for NATO in the future. The centalisation of China within the remit of NATO, and inclusion of Asia-Pacific allies, hints at expansion beyond the foundational scope of the alliance, and into the military arm of a US-led alliance of democratic states.
  • Biden says that summit brought "together democratic allies and partners from the Atlantic and Pacific to focus on the challenges that matter to our future and defend the rule-based order, including from China."
  • Biden also touts the infrastructure project "the Partnership for Global Infrastructure Initiative - the G7 response to China's Belt and Road Initiative.
  • Biden says that the initiative will bring USD$600 billion of investment in the next six years to low and middle income countries. According to Biden this will mitigate China's "abusive and coersive trade practices" in the developing world.
  • Biden says that this initiative has already delivered results in Angola - a country which joined the Belt and Road Initiative in 2018.
