Biden Speech At United Nations Underway

UN

President Biden's speech to informally open the 78th session United Nations General Assembly is now underway in New York City.

  • Livestream: YouTube, UN Website
  • Biden’s speech will be his first major address on foreign policy since remarks in Vietnam last week which were seized upon by some elements of the conservative press as evidence he is too old to perform the functions of the presidency.
  • The New York Times wrote, following the Vietnam speech: “Although Mr. Biden fielded questions on a range of foreign policy issues, including China’s economic troubles and climate change, he spoke softly and appeared tired.”
  • Biden will need a more assured performance today to arrest a period of intense scrutiny over his age and metal competence ahead of 2024 presidential election.
  • A senior White House official told reporters yesterday that Biden sees UNGA, “as an outstanding opportunity for him and his leadership to advance U.S. interests and values on a range of issues. This includes mobilizing resources for sustainable development and infrastructure, galvanizing cooperation on the climate crisis, and strengthening global support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
