Biden To Announce New Package Of Ukraine Aid Ahead Of Zelenskyy WH Meeting

US

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has told reporters that President Biden will today announce a new package of Ukraine aid, which will include "significant air defence capabilities," to help Ukraine defend against a "brutal wave" of Russian airstrikes and "harden itself" against "what is likely to be a tough winter."

  • Sullivan says today's White House meeting between Biden and Zelenskyy comes "at a significant moment" as Ukraine make progress in its counteroffensive.
  • According to Sullivan, today's package will also include additional ammunition, anti-armour capabilities, and HIMARS systems to assist in the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
  • Sullivan says that Biden hasn't taken the provision of ACATMS - long range weapons systems - off the table but has determined not to provide them yet.
  • On the prospect of House Republicans blocking new supplemental aid to Ukraine, Sullivan says: "Bipartisan support has sustained the immense and impressive levels of assistance to date. We believe that will continue... we believe there will be bipartisan support to continue funding Ukraine to the extent that we believe is necessary."
  • President Biden will welcome Zelenskyy to the White House at 15:00 20:00 BST for two bilateral meetings.
