Bilateral Meeting Between Biden, Tusk, And Duda Underway Shortly

NATO

President Biden is shortly due to meet bilaterally with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Polish President Andrzej Duda at the White House - a rare meeting involving the heads of state and government of a foreign nation. The leaders do not have a press availability scheduled.

  • The Polish delegation is expected to call on NATO members to hike the alliance spending benchmark from 2% to 3% of GDP and urge greater reinforcement of the NATO eastern flank.
  • Duda wrote in a Washington Post op-ed published yesterday, which touted Poland's record defence spending: "A return to the status quo ante is not possible. Russia’s imperialistic ambitions and aggressive revisionism are pushing Moscow toward a direct confrontation with NATO, with the West and, ultimately, with the whole free world."
  • Duda wrote, "I believe that the July summit in Washington marking NATO’s 75th anniversary will produce significant decisions," in regards to hiking NATO spending.
  • However, today's meeting will likely be underpinned by concerns that a second Trump administration could see the US take a less active role in supporting Ukraine, and NATO more broadly.
  • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in an interview this week that Trump wouldn’t, “give a penny in the Ukraine-Russia war,” should he win the White House in November.
  • Politico notes: “The comments from Orbán follow a huddle between [Orbán and Trump] at Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Friday which was criticized by the White House.”
