Blinken Trip To China May Take Place Next Week

US-CHINA

Politico is reporting that US Secretary of State Blinken's trip to China is now in planning to take place next week. This won't be a huge surprise to the market, as reports earlier in the week suggested such a trip could take place in the next few weeks.

  • Blinken's trip, if it eventuates, would be the highest ranking official to visit China since Mike Pompeo, then Secretary of State, visited in 2018.
  • This planning comes after a meeting between senior China Foreign Ministry officials and US Department of State officials earlier in the week (see this link).
  • The US has stated re-engagement with China remains in its early stages and that competition is likely to remain the 'dominant frame' of the US-China relationship.
  • Still, a Blinken trip could be seen as positive step towards lowering tensions. His earlier trip was cancelled following the balloon scandal in Feb of this year. The US White House denied reports late yesterday (US time) that China and Cuba had reached a deal to establish a spy facility on the island (see this link).
