Blinken Urges Turkey Not To Retain Russian Missile System

On the sidelines of the NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, reports say that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken talking to his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu stated that Turkey should not retain its Russian-made S-400 air defence missile systems.

  • Turkey's purchase and deployment of the Russian system has been a major security concern for the US and NATO, and the bloc has frequently sought to encourage Ankara to ditch the missiles in favour of ones designed by a NATO member.
  • Cavusoglu is said to have brought up the PKK and the Gullen Organisation, with Ankara seeking US support in containing both groups.
