Bolsonaro Pledges to Respect Vote Result

BRAZIL
  • President Jair Bolsonaro pledged to accept the result of Brazil’s October election after repeating unsubstantiated claims of past voter fraud during a broadcast on the country’s most-watched television news show.
  • Local analysts have commented on how the interview was particularly hostile. They mention the lack of discussion over pertinent issues for regular Brazilians will have had little impact on voting intentions at this juncture.
    • As noted yesterday, electoral campaigning has entered a new phase this week, with greater exposure of the main candidates on television. Candidate Lula will talk to Globo on Thursday.
  • On Monday, Lula pledged that his government will be fiscally responsible.
  • “It is nice when we have demand-driven inflation, but when it’s not the case, [Central Bank] shouldn’t need to use interest rate hikes to reduce inflation,” former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva told the international press in Sao Paulo on Monday.
  • A lot of serious work must to be done to bring the interest rate to a figure considered reasonable by the Brazilian society.
  • Lula said climate will be his administration‘s “priority zero” and that Brazil needs to contain deforestation and greenhouse emissions
    • “We will shut down any possibility of illegal mining”: Lula added.
  • Lula also defended minimum wage increase to boost economy while pledging to be fiscally responsible.
