Bolsonaro Steps Up Radical Rhetoric Ahead Of Election

BRAZIL
  • President Bolsonaro did not mention privatizing state-controlled oil company Petrobras in his re-election plan released on Wednesday that promises to continue pursuing policies that reduce the size of the state.
    • "The government ... will proceed with reordering the state's role in the economy, through privatization and divestment of state-owned companies, to focus on state participation in essential activities and in promoting Brazil's economic, social and sustainable development," the plan said.
  • Additionally, in an agribusiness convention on Wednesday, he promised to further ease laws that restrict the ownership of fire weapons if re-elected in October and called on his supporters to arm themselves.
    • “Our generation can’t be remembered in the future as one that had a chance to do something but cowered before two or three people,” he said in a not-so-veiled reference to top justices who are presiding over the country’s electoral court. “Buy your weapons, that’s in the bible.”
  • Separately, in decidedly undiplomatic language, Economy Minister Guedes has renewed a spat with France over deforestation in the Amazon, telling the European nation it is becoming "irrelevant" and risks being told where to stick its criticism. (AP)
