Borrell-EU Seeks To Collaborate On Defence w/UK, But No Interest From London

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell states that the bloc has sought to collaborate on defence and security issues with the UK following Brexit but London has not shown any interest in the matter. Also says that the EU is obliged to insist on its own 'strategic autonomy' in the realm of foreign, defence, and security policy.

  • Mehreen Khan at the FT tweets: "Eternal optimist Josep Borrell says timing of AUKUS shows "timeliness" of the EU's Indo-Pacific strategy. He adds the French are now pushing EU to bulk up its presence in the region "to protect our interests and values". Borrell: "I'm not saying we should send in an EU fleet in [the Indo Pacific] but we should have EU vessels from different countries each day...lets reinforce our presence, coordinate so it is a presence that we can be sure of"
