BRICS Holds Another High-Level Conference Ahead Of Leaders' Summit

SOUTH AFRICA

South African Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said that BRICS countries must promote peace and security around the world, as top security officials and senior diplomatic representatives from the blocs started a meeting in Johannesburg to lay the groundwork for the upcoming leaders' summit.

  • The list of participants of the meeting in Johannesburg includes Russian National Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev and Chinese Foreign Affairs Commission Office Director Wang Yi, who has just been named Foreign Minister.
  • The meeting continues today and South Africa's state broadcaster SABC reports that "the war in Ukraine will likely dominate the discussions," with a number of bilateral meetings taking place on the fringes of the conference.
  • Indian media outlets reported that National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met with Wang Yi to discuss border tensions around the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which have weighed on Sino-Indian relations since 2020.
