Cabinet Reshuffle To Be Announced Within Days

  • Western Cape Premier Alan Winde of the main opposition Democratic Alliance outlined plans to add 5,700MW in generation capacity to its grid, which should be sufficient to meet the needs of the provincial economy. Winde said that he spoke with former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter, who warned him that "there's big trouble ahead" and provincial authorities should facilitate work on boosting energy provision, with South Africa undergoing record-breaking power outages.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa will reshuffle his Cabinet in the matter of days, his spokesman Vincent Magwenya told reporters yesterday. According to Magwenya, "there is a sense of urgency that the President fills those vacancies [in the Cabinet] as soon as possible."
  • Statistics South Africa will today publish data on January electricity output and consumption.
