California Regulators Approve Storage Expansion at Aliso Canyon

California regulators voted unanimously Aug. 31 to boost the capacity of the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility.

  • This allows the facility to increase its storage by 27 bcf to 68.6 bcf.
  • The California Public Utilities Commission said in its proposal that the expansion will “help secure energy reliability and protect against high natural gas and electric prices.”
  • The decision is contentious as the facility was the site of the USA’s largest known methane leak in 2015.
